It’s been a couple weeks since we started shipping and we’ve received a lot of great feedback from our user community and the far reaches of the interweb. Our goal was to make Pogoplug a breeze to setup and a cinch to use, so…how’d we do?
We’d like to take this opportunity to invite all Pogoplug owners to give us some feedback by taking a quick survey (we promise…it’s 11 questions). Surveys like this will allow us to make improvements and here the valued voices of our users. If you’d like to get started, click here.
As always, we also welcome comments here on our blog and on Twitter (@pogoplug).
Current revision of the mac client seems to work pretty well now (.97). The bad bit is that you don’t support journalling in HFS+ volumes and I haven’t had time to mess with the drive journalling setting. Pogoplug not implementing some form of journalling support is turning out to be a big deal, since I can’t write to the disk Also the software does not yet work with Mac OS X 10.4.X (Tiger) which is a problem here.
After some trouble initially getting Pogoplug to see my drives, it magically started working, and has worked great so far since I’ve had it. I’m THRILLED to finally have access to all my files from wherever I am!
I have the Pogoplug icon set to come up as a drive on my desktop. I tried the web interface which worked fine, but browsing it as a drive is definitely more convenient.
One thing I discovered today is that I have to disconnect the drive from the Pogoplug in order for Time Machine to recognize it, so I can do a backup from the Mac. A minor inconvenience, but it would be nice if I didn’t have to do that.
I also am unable to see the Time Machine partition of the drive on Pogoplug, but I haven’t really spent time to investigate it, and I’m not sure Time Machine would work through Pogoplug anyway, would it?
Just ran into a situation where I tried to intuitively do something and it did not work via the web interface. I know the web interface is limited but I also know there are web technologies that should allow for better file management.
When organizing my files I attempted to drag a folder into another one so it will be a subdir. Of course…the only way to do this is with the mac or windows plug in.
Is it on the map for the web interface? Just curious.
Also from a security standpoint I would like to manage the ACL’s to this device for SSH/Telnet access. It seems with the recent surge in SSH penetration I would prefer to see both TELNET and SSH access limited to your proxy servers by default and if the customer wants to open it up to know networks they can do that. Your default root password is VERY guessable.
Any security model changes in the works? What about direct LAN access (FTP/HTTP/SMB/NFS)
Thanks
Scott Griffith
ALSO – do you or have you considered branded resale of this device to Service Providers?
Thanks for an awesome product.
Initial setup took sometime and quite frustrating. The most frustrating issue is that I lost most of my iTunes library and trying to get my AppleTV to read the drive was overwhelming and time consuming.
So far I am somewhat satisfied. Just wished I had my movies and music back. Apple said sorry.
No problems at all setting up the plug. The interface can still use some work, but for a first build I am impressed. Would like to sort directories and have a better overall experience opening media files on the iphone(big ones often crash and many formats are not supported). One thing I really like that nobody seems to mention in the reviews is that you can use almost any format USB drive. I realize that NAS drives have a lot more flexibility if you fully understand networking/opening ports on routers, etc, but many people don’t. You can’t just take a dedicated NAS drive, plug it into your computer and get it to work because of the format. Also really cool is that you can buy a cheap powered hub and plug in bunches of drives. The web interface is also much faster than any other similar web based solution such as with Buffalo drives. Just my 2 cents–keep up the good work and I look forward to the evolution. For those that worry about you guys going out of business–for heaven’s sake its $100. How about that 250gig NAS drive you bought for $400 and now the software won’t work any longer and it isn’t supported and the files are all in a proprietary format–well you get the picture. Thanks for listening
I tested it with a 8 Gbyte SanDisk. That worked fine, I followed the instructions and everything came up running. I replaced the SanDisk with a 1 TB usb drive. That came up running also. I am using Linux exclusively. I downloaded the pogoplugfs-linux64-0.9.9.99.tar, installed it on three desktop PC’s running Ubuntu 8.10 and one laptop running Ubuntu 9.04. Everything came up running. I am able to look at the POGOPLUG as a local folder or access it via the web. I have shared photo’s with friends as far away as New Zealand when I was testing with the SanDisk. Everything worked fine. I had no problems and am very satisfied with it.
I love the pogoplug. I recently bought a 1TB western digital hd for it works great. i have everything on it from home vids to music and programs now i can clear up some space oon my pc and have everything in one central location. THANKS pogoplug!!! and with no monthly fees its awesome
Cheers,
Had my “plug” up and running in no time.
I have my son transferring a video to me from above the arctic circle.
Question / improvement?
Since this is such a large file (over 500MB ) why can’t the interface show the status of the transfer / download? I keep refreshing the screen to see if the file size has stopped “growing” and therefore will know it is complete / done.
Our Plug worked fine for about a week with minimal use. Now it will not detect any hard drives and it causing a load of trouble on our network. I am under the impression this Plug is faulty. Anyone else had any trouble?
I got my pogoplug up and running with my 1TB NTFS formatted USB drive in no time. My only gripe is that about 25% of my photos do not show up on the web interface. I see a stock image as thumbnail and when I click on it I see an empty box where the photo should be. I can, however, download that same image to my local drive and open it fine. So there is something not working right with photos and your web interface.
Setup was a breeze. I am testing it with a flash drive now until my 500GB backup drive arrives. I have accessed it from multiple network computers at home without problem and my son can access it from his netbook while at his mothers house. I have installed the software to have local access from the networked machines. But, I notice the software needs upgraded every few days. It will not upgrade the current installation. I have to uninstall the previous version and reboot before installing the new version. I don’t know what any of the newer version do that the previous one didn’t. No problems with the device or how it works to this date. I work on the road and I love having this.
Got my plug up and running with not a single hiccup. It is very “responsive” even without the fastest dsl service. Like others have stated, I love being able to access my files with such ease. I plan on using it a lot for school related items, and hopefully I will be able to log in from their uber-restricted network. I cant wait till a bigger user community starts making kewl add-ons and upgrades for the units. Keep up the great work!
Great product! Setup went smoothly. Video works well with the Iphone app. I am hopeful this feature will be available on other portable devices ( LG Voyager, Blackberry Storm, etc)
Way too many updates, it’s like twice a week. Are there that many critical issues with the product or can you maybe make it once a month. And how about automatically including an unistall of the current version with the update so I don’t have to keep taking the extra step for you. I like the product, great potential, but this is getting a bit irratating.
Can someone explain how you access files via the Pogoplug from an iPhone? Do you need some special application on the iPhone?
Everything set up quickly and worked like a charm. I am REALLY disappointed in the online browser file interface. It absolutely needs to be able to organize files alphabetically. Trying to browse through my iTunes folder to share a song with a friend is a nightmare.
I agree w/ Steve, the updates need to be less frequent and more meaningful. I check the blog before downloading, but you never mention the new features or bug fixes that are included with each release.
“Jim” – to answer you question about the iPhone… go to the App Store and search “pogoplug” and download the free app. It’s very simple to setup and you’ll be off and running in no time.
Pogoplug is great, but would like to see support for divx playback on the iPhone. Is this a limitation of the iPhone itself or can the app be updated to include this?
After it’s all set-up, what’s the experience of trying to watch an avi encoded movie from the enabled hard drive or listen to music? There’s upload AND download time and i’ve wondered what the experience is like versus just looking at documents, etc. Is there a lot of lag time with movies?
This thing is made for Apple TV or Popcorn Hour. BUT, YOU CAN’T SMB INTO THIS THING?????? CRIPPLED!
Can’t get my Ubuntu 8.04 box to mount it because of a certificate error:

I think it’s GREAT. It’s already saved my butt a few times and I’ve only had in a week. I LOVE how I can have a drive to easily back up my entire laptop to….also this allows all of my files to be available to me anywhere in the world. Very cool. I realize these capabilities have been around for awhile in other products, but Pogoplug makes it easy and adds a few other perks as well.
THANKS!
love the pogo idea. Needs some options though…
User upgradable RAM
Dual Ethernet (plug in linux router)
Extra USB plugs (usb hub support?)
Windows XP support
VGA Over USB support
Cant wait for these!!!
Just wondering if it’s possible to connect an external drive to a computer directly AND to this device?
Thanks,
Kevin
Perhaps I am misunderstanding something.
When working on a computer that is connected to the same router as the Pogo, does the file access have to go all the way through the internet to the pogo server, then back to your computer? Or can you also access the hard drive through the home network (for speedier file transfers)?
BTW- Pogo seems like a great idea!
Thanks,
Kevin
Wonderful product (potentially) and good Web back end but buggy software is affecting many of your users as images have no preview and opening them shows a black screen. Same issues are seen on your iPhone app.
Worse yet is that your tech support admidts to not having any solutions in sight. Someone in your development team needs to dig deeper and kill this bug.
I like it but would love to see a few improvements especially being able to download and upload entire folders worth of content without the plug trying to zip it for me.
Please add a blackberry app. I just got my Pogoplug about a day ago so I cant offer any useful insight so far. Regardless, I havent had any issues yet and I’ve found it incredibly useful. Great product that could be exponentially useful with a blackberry app.
Thanks guys!
sir…
I am student of computer science engineering i m very glad about ur new invention …but i stucked thinking about it actual internal working how can i get know about that
