The iPad and the Pogoplug: A Powerful Combo

It seems spring fever has been replaced by iPad fever. There’s a buzz in the air about ship dates and those who haven’t yet bought an iPad are fretting over whether to get the 16, 32 or 64GB model.

We think the iPad is a great new way to consume multimedia. The intuitive multi-touch interface, the immersive high-resolution screen and the extreme ease of portability mean it is now easier and more enjoyable than ever to share photos and watch videos on the go. The iPad’s only limitation is the relatively small amount of data the device can hold. It’s like having a fast, cool car with a small gas tank. Just when you are getting revved up, you’re out of gas. The Pogoplug gives the iPad an infinite gas tank because the Pogoplug service allows you to continuously stream your media directly to your iPad. You don’t have to choose which files, photos and videos to put on your iPad because you will have access to them all. Though we at Pogoplug are as anxious as anyone to get our hands on one, we aren’t worrying about internal memory because we know that with the help of a Pogoplug you can get as much data as want on your iPad.

We’ve had our iPhone app available for several months and it is one of the most popular additions to the service we have made since we started shipping Pogoplugs. Our users often blog or tweet about how they love being able to access their whole digital life through their iPhone. They love streaming their own music to their handset. They love having their own movies streamed to them on the go. They call it “heaven” and “cloud mine.”

With the launch of the iPad, we are updating the my.pogoplug.com service to work with html5 video and audio playback so you can stream all your media using the Pogoplug web app from the iPad.

Once you get your iPad tell us how you are using the Pogoplug and iPad combination.

So my iPad is comming the next days. I’m very excited about it. Can you tell me about when it will be possible to stream videos from my hard drives via pogoplug onto my iPad in a good or even in a high definition quality?
    Thanks and keep it up!

  6. Hans says:

Any eta on a dedicated iPad client? The iPhone client is interesting but some elements don’t seem to work – specifically the download function doesn’t seem to be functional -at least I can’t find the file post download. Thanks

  7. Andy Foote says:

I echo Hans – please release an IPad app asap! Looking forward to the day where pogoplug tech is licensed to and built into the next Apple TV…

  8. I got the update.

Going through movies works well and audio works well too. That being said, I have found some problems in the UI.

For one, you can’t scroll. You can have a list of videos, photos, etc and not be able to view them all in your current view. I’ve had to change to a view that supports smaller thumbnails.

I’ve also found that the animation is sluggish. This includes the notice message that slides up and down to tell me that I have videos that are being transcoded as well as pulling up images in slideshow mode. I almost suspect that js animations aren’t going to cut it and that you’ll need something more native, like css transitions.

Lastly, the slideshow never feels right on the iPad. When using it, the images feel too small and moving between images is cumbersome.

All that being said, I don’t want that to come off as a negative. I know the iPad just came out and I wanted to share my experience I had on my iPad on my.pogoplug.com.

Thank you for your hard work and quick turn-around on bringing some HTML5 to my.pogoplug.com.

Please bring us an iPad App !!!

  12. V.J. says:

Bought my Pogoplug expressly to serve my iPad, but gotta say I’m disappointed so far. We definitely need either a dedicated iPad app or at least a universal version.

  13. Roman says:

Pls give us an iPad App !

  14. Gordon says:

Please add the “open with” extension to your iphone or iPad app – this would make it open files like keynote, word, pages, powerpoint, etc – with a registered type on the device

  15. earnest says:

If you’re making changes to the pogoplug web interface to make it more friendly to iPads, would you mind adding a homescreen icon?
